Professional book editor Jim Feldkamp demonstrates what he believes it takes in life to succeed in the often highly competitive editing field.
A copy editor with experience at multiple publishing agencies, Jim Feldkamp specializes in national security, foreign affairs, history, and travel. Celebrated for his work as a professional book editor, Jim Feldkamp explains what he believes it takes to succeed in the field.
“As a former FBI agent, I have over 25 years of experience working within national security,” explains Jim Feldkamp, speaking from his home in Northern Virginia.
Jim Feldkamp has a master’s degree in international affairs and has written a celebrated university textbook, titled Theory and Politics of Terrorism. “Today, I teach courses on subjects primarily surrounding terrorism,” explains Feldkamp, “and have edited numerous books on the same topic via Oxford, Routledge, and Lynne Rienner Publishers.”
With expertise in law, international security, and the Middle East, Jim Feldkamp says that he enjoys speaking and writing about terrorism, history, and current affairs alike. “I also enjoy speaking and writing on what you might call ‘useless male trivia,’” adds Jim, laughing.
Part of a combination of what he believes it takes to succeed as a professional book editor, Jim Feldkamp suggests that his focus on terrorism, international security, history, law, current affairs, and more allows him to provide a unique appreciation of the world. Feldkamp’s personal background, too, he says, also has a significant bearing on his successful book editing career. “Born under a rock and subsequently raised by wolves, I still managed to graduate from university,” he jokes.
“However, realizing that the circus wasn’t in town, I opted to forgo the normal route,” Feldkamp goes on, “of applying for a job, and, instead, I joined the U.S. Navy.”
Here, Jim Feldkamp would enroll in flight school before being assigned to the EA-6B ‘Prowler’ – the navy’s carrier-based electronic attack aircraft. “After flying in Desert Storm and on other adventures around the world,” Feldkamp recalls, “I resigned from active duty to become a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
Jim Feldkamp would soon become a founding member of the Joint Counter-Terrorism Task Force in Norfolk, Virginia. Very quickly gainfully employed in the wake of 9/11, Feldkamp was, however, recalled to active duty some years later in 2007 to establish the international outreach office for the Office of Global Maritime Situational Awareness.
“Establishing the Office of Global Maritime Situational Awareness’ international outreach office, I coordinated information-sharing among federal agencies, foreign governments, and the international shipping industry,” Jim Feldkamp explains, “to increase maritime safety and security.”
Today, and in addition to teaching, Jim Feldkamp also provides enrichment speeches onboard international cruise ships. Feldkamp has now both lectured and delivered enrichment speeches across Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean on topics ranging from military history to the rise of the Vikings in Scandinavia.
Recently, Jim Feldkamp returned from a Clipper yacht race around the world. “Well, almost around the world!” says the retired naval officer.
Jim Feldkamp and team were in the Philippines, he says, when COVID-19 broke out, leading to a mad dash back to the United States. “Incidentally,” he points out, “that was where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan died in his circumnavigation around the world 500 years ago.”
“Oh, the irony!” adds professional book editor Jim Feldkamp, wrapping up.

Having worked under a few of the nation’s top anti-terrorist organizations, Jim Feldkamp shares his thorough understanding of terrorism theory and politics in a new textbook.
In the past, Commander USN Ret. Jim Feldkamp flew combat missions as a Naval Flight Officer during Desert Storm, served as a Counter-Measures Officer (ECMO), and took on the role of Navigator for the EA-6B, the Navy’s carrier-based electronic attack aircraft. Afterwards, he served as a Special Agent for the FBI and helped found the Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force in Norfolk, Virginia.
He served as a Special Agent for many years and only stepped down from his position to run for Congress in Oregon’s 4th Congressional District, becoming the Republican nominee in both the 2004 and 2006 elections. Jim Feldkamp was called back in for Navy reserve duty in 2007 where he helped establish the precursor office of the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office. There, he coordinated all domestic and international information-sharing of non-classified information among U.S. federal government agencies, foreign governments, and the international maritime shipping industry. The focus of his role was to increase maritime security and maritime domain awareness, and he also worked with the Office of Global Maritime Situational Awareness in Washington, DC during.
Jim Feldkamp holds a M.A. in international affairs from the Catholic University of America and is also a graduate of the Naval War College. Today, he’s a Subject Matter Expert at Georgetown University teaching undergraduate courses in domestic and international terrorism, and he frequently speaks on terrorism and maritime security at various US and international conferences.
After gaining decades of experience on international terrorism and teaching courses on the subject, he helped author and edit a university textbook through Cognella Academic Publishing on the “Theory and Politics of Terrorism.”
In the textbook, Jim Feldkamp helps deliver a comprehensive look into the various aspects of terrorism around the world, including the causes behind it, the concepts involved, and the roles religion, public relations, and politics play. The book dives into the roots of terrorism and the steps that lead to radical action from international terrorist groups. In addition, Jim Feldkamp shares his expertise on various forms of terrorism intervention that are employed in scenarios today.
From the textbook’s official description:
“Theory and Politics of Terrorism gives students a greater understanding of different aspects of terrorism as both a philosophy, and as a chosen course of action outside the boundaries of recognized and accepted socio-political discourse.”
Through his work, Jim Feldkamp improves students’ understanding of critical factors in terrorism and contributes his personal expertise in the hopes of eventually defeating terrorism on a global scale.
As yearly growing conditions have altered how and when seasonal grape production takes place as a result of global climate change, wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs like Jim Feldkamp called for greater environmental action to prevent the degradation of vineyards. “We really have to do something […]

“If Americans are not prepared for an onslaught of hacking as a technological form of assault, then they are not preparing correctly.” the Cybersecurity expert has espoused over and over again throughout the years. Jim Feldkamp suggests keeping both computer hardware and software updated once every three to five years. “Ransomware can target major corporations so if they can be hacked easily, you, as a citizen, need to be aware of the issue.” Jim Feldkamp says.
Jim Feldkamp is a former US Naval Flight Officer, Counter-Measures Officer (ECMO), and Navigator for the EA-6B. Thanks to his assistance in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991, he became a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at Norfolk, Virginia. His tasks were to develop the Joint Counter-Terrorism Task Force that would serve as an aerial surveillance tool against those terrorist suspects. After a short stint as a politician, Jim Feldkamp returned to his first love of military endeavors where he, in 2007, formed the precursor office of NMIO (National Maritime Intelligence Office) that worked to share information of domestic and international non-classified matters across federal and foreign governmental agencies. As a result, Jim Feldkamp has spent many hours in the office working up how best to share this information without having to deal with any leaks in the content being shared.
“Having a strong password that is tough to guess and don’t have any kind of pattern is key to maintaining secure systems.” Jim Feldkamp has noted several times in many of his keynote addresses to cybersecurity groups. “If you want to use a VPN with hashing algorithms in order to send and receive data from foreign countries, be careful to use the proper VPN as foreign parties can uncover information that you may have thought was being disguised but really isn’t.”
Thanks to his raw experience, Jim Feldkamp has transformed himself into a rather well-known expert in the cybersecurity space.
“If you are looking to transfer data from old hardware to new hardware, the most important first step is to transfer the data. Immediately afterward, wipe the data with a data wiping software. This doesn’t just delete the data but it wipes it out and creates a new binary code replacement that is virtually impossible to decode and obtain private data from.”
This advice and several others are just the tips of the iceberg when it comes to Jim Feldkamp’s knowledge in the area of cybersecurity. It will be interesting to see what new advice he will be able to deliver in the future as he continues his career as an official in the field.
